WeRoad, a Milan-based travel-tech company organizing curated group adventure trips for Millennials and Gen Z, has raised $58 million in Series C funding led by Airbnb. The company connects solo travelers aged 18-49 in small groups of up to 15, with dedicated Group Leaders handling logistics so participants can focus on building connections. The capital will fund its first major expansion outside Europe into the US market, starting with Austin, Texas.
Airbnb Backs IRL Travel Platform
The timing comes amid growing interest in the "IRL economy" as young adults seek offline connections. Airbnb took a 10% stake and a board seat while also hiring WeRoad CEO Andrea D'Amico to lead its hotels division. Existing investors including H14 participated in the round that brings total funding to $100 million.
Loneliness Epidemic Fuels Demand
Approximately 30% of young adults report feeling lonely daily, with 90% of WeRoad customers joining trips solo. The company addresses this by matching travelers by age brackets and shared interests rather than destinations alone. Its WeMeet app extends the model to local events, hosting 2,000 gatherings with 50,000 participants across 35 European cities.
Group Chemistry as Core Product
WeRoad differentiates through a marketplace model linking travelers to a network of 4,000 Group Leaders focused on soft skills and group facilitation rather than traditional guiding. Pre-trip WhatsApp groups and ice-breaker activities prioritize social bonding. This contrasts with broader-age operators like G Adventures and Intrepid Travel that serve mixed demographics without the same age-segmented, connection-first emphasis.
As co-founder Paolo De Nadai explained:
"It started from a very personal need. When you finish college and start working, it becomes harder to find people to travel with."
Strategic Investor Signals Alignment
Airbnb's investment and simultaneous CEO hire point to deeper strategic integration potential. WeRoad generated €130 million in revenue in 2025, up 62.4% year-on-year, with 100,000 travelers that year and a 60% repeat rate. The deal follows WeRoad's Series B of €18 million in 2023.
Group Travel Market Expands Rapidly
The group travel market reached approximately $369.8 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow to between $689.9 billion and $798.3 billion by 2034-2035, with a CAGR of 5.83% to 7.6%. The solo travel segment, a core focus for WeRoad, stood at $549.8 billion in 2025 and is expected to reach $1,624.2 billion by 2033. Competitors include Flash Pack with $9.9 million in total funding and TrovaTrip, which raised $15 million in Series A funding in 2022.
US Launch Underway
WeRoad has already conducted its first US Group Leader selection weekend in Austin. The company plans to leverage its WeMeet events platform for customer acquisition in the new market while maintaining existing itineraries across 150 destinations. Leadership transition places operational control with co-founders Paolo De Nadai, Fabio Bin, and Erika De Santi.
