Vertoro, a Geleen, Netherlands-based company that converts forestry and agricultural residues into Goldilocks® — a 100% bio-based renewable crude oil — has raised €17M in Series B funding. The round included €10M in new capital plus €7M converted loan notes and was co-led by Maersk Growth and Invest-NL. The capital will support scaling of its demonstration plant and preparation for the first commercial facility at the Port of Rotterdam.
Lignin Platform Attracts Strategic Backers
The timing aligns with regulatory pressure on maritime emissions and corporate net-zero targets. Kvasir Technologies raised €10M Series A in June 2026 for a similar lignin-to-bio-oil approach. WasteFuel secured a $10M Series B tranche in 2023 led by BP Ventures. Vertoro's platform approach targets chemicals first, then marine fuels, then sustainable aviation fuel.
Waste Streams Offer Low-Cost Feedstock
Vertoro processes technical lignin that pulp and paper or second-generation ethanol producers currently burn as waste. Less than 2% of global lignin output is valorized today. The company's mild solvolytic process runs at 200°C and under 50 bars without catalysts, delivering near-100% biomass conversion and stable oligomers that dissolve in polar solvents.
Drop-In Oil Replaces Fossil Crude
Goldilocks® retains lignin's polymeric structure as oligomers rather than breaking it into monomers. This preserves functionality for materials while enabling drop-in use in existing refineries. A peer-reviewed analysis projects $802 per tonne VLSFO-equivalent cost and 15 gCO₂e/MJ carbon intensity for a planned Brazil plant.
As incoming CEO Dirk den Ouden stated:
"Vertoro is building a bridge between sustainable biomass and the global fuel system. By creating a renewable oil that can serve multiple industries, from chemicals to shipping to aviation, we can scale faster and deliver meaningful emissions reductions sooner."
Mission Capital Validates Decarbonization Path
Maersk Growth's participation signals strategic interest from the world's largest shipping company, which has committed to net-zero by 2040. Invest-NL and Climate Tech Partners (backed by the Airbus-Qantas sustainable aviation fuel partnership) joined the round. The syndicate blends state-backed, climate-specialist, and corporate capital typical of cleantech infrastructure plays.
Biofuels Market Expands Under Policy Pressure
The global lignin market stands at $1.27B and is projected to reach $1.75B by 2034. The marine biofuels market ranges from $4.2B to $8.15B today. Vertoro's multi-market strategy reduces reliance on any single policy regime while leveraging existing refinery assets.
Competitors such as GoodFuels focus on distribution of UCO-based fuels, while Prometheus Fuels pursues CO₂-to-methanol pathways. Vertoro's lignin platform offers feedstock flexibility and lower processing severity.
Commercial Milestones Ahead
The company operates a 1 ktpa continuous demonstration plant and targets a 5 ktpa commercial plant in Rotterdam by early 2027. Future licensed facilities are planned at 100-250 kt per year capacity. With the new CEO from Stora Enso, Vertoro is shifting from technology validation to commercial execution.
