UniverCell, a Germany-based developer of custom battery electrodes and high-performance lithium-ion cells, has raised €30M ($34.75M) in Series B funding co-led by DeepTech & Climate Fonds and IKA. The company offers flexible manufacturing from lab prototypes to mass production using the world's most flexible electrode coating line. The capital will scale its 1.5 GWh gigafactory beyond current capacity for premium pouch and 21700 cylindrical cells.

Gigafactories Falter Amid China Pressure

The timing aligns with European battery turmoil: Northvolt filed for bankruptcy in March 2025, while Automotive Cells Company shelved German and Italian factories in February 2026 due to costs. Customcells Group raised $63M previously for silicon-anode cells. UniverCell's dry-coating process targets premium niches like eVTOL and renewables, sidestepping mass EV scale challenges.

High Costs Derail EV Battery Scale

Europe's lithium-ion market stands at $21.4B in 2025, plagued by energy costs 3-5x Asia's and permitting delays averaging 2 years. Northvolt's collapse exposed over-reliance on EV subsidies amid Chinese dominance holding 80% global capacity. Commodity cell makers face 20-30% cost disadvantages, pushing failures like ACC's gigafactory cuts.

Dry Coating Unlocks Flexibility

UniverCell's solvent-free dry coating saves over 27% energy versus wet processes, coating at 60 m/min across 750 mm width with custom chemistries like NMC811 or silicon-graphite. This enables >300 Wh/kg pouch and cylindrical cells for aviation and power tools, unlike Nyobolt's fast-charge focus ($100M raised) or Anaphite's precursor powders ($23M). Full vertical integration from electrode to testing ensures traceability.

Vertical Stack Beats Commodity

As Dr. Stefan Permien, CEO noted:

"Dry coating allows us to combine performance, cost efficiency, and sustainability at an industrial scale."

Producing 64,000 m² electrodes daily, UniverCell already hit its 1,000th customer order. Competitors like Customcells emphasize silicon anodes, but UniverCell's line handles diverse formats without retooling, targeting Europe's sustainability mandates.

DeepTech Backs EU Sovereignty

Co-leads DeepTech & Climate Fonds and IKA, plus WIKA and EIC Fund, signal mission capital for derisking premium production. DTCF's Dr. Elisabeth Schrey highlighted:

"The European Battery sector is in a critical situation with pressure from Chinese JVs."

This round builds on EU/GRW grants, validating UniverCell's path versus bankrupt giants.

Li-Ion Demand Grows to $35B

Europe's lithium-ion sector projects $21.4B in 2025 to $35B by 2030 at 10.3% CAGR, driven by renewables and e-mobility. EU Batteries Regulation enforces low-carbon footprints from 2025, favoring local makers. Yet structural woes persist, with €643M Innovation Fund aiding survivors.

Niche Players Outpace EV Giants

Customcells Group ($63M) pushes high-silicon for e-mobility, Nyobolt ($100M) ultra-fast charging, and Varta restructures with €300M EU aid. UniverCell's 1.5 GWh premium focus—Europe's largest operating—avoids EV oversupply, aligning with air taxi and drone booms.

Ex-CustomCells Founders Scale Again

CEO Stefan Permien, ex-CTO at Customcells, doubled turnover there via R&D and production builds; COO Marius Strack adds 10+ years in electrode processes. This duo from profitable Li-ion ops now replicates success at UniverCell's gigafactory.

Cylindrical Ramp Targets 2026

Funds enable 21700 cylindrical series production starting June 2026 at 50,000 cells/month, expanding beyond 1.5 GWh. Hiring accelerates in engineering and finance, with sodium-ion pilots via BMWK-funded SIBDE project.
