SugaROx Raises £2.5M Series A for T6P Biostimulants

SugaROx raised £2.5M ($3.4M) Series A tranche led by The Mosaic Company for T6P biostimulants that boost crop yields up to 22% via foliar delivery. Amid biostimulants funding drop.

SugaROx, a Hertfordshire-based developer of precision crop biostimulants, has raised £2.5M ($3.4M) in an ongoing Series A funding round led by The Mosaic Company. The company's lead product delivers plant-permeable trehalose-6-phosphate (T6P) via foliar spray to deactivate famine-signaling enzymes and boost yield and resilience. This tranche follows a prior £400k seed investment from Mosaic and will fund expanded field trials across the UK, EU, and US for regulatory approval and commercialization, targeting a UK wheat launch in 2027.

Biostimulants Funding Defies VC Chill

The raise comes as biostimulants VC funding plunged 86% to $135M in 2024, per AgFunderNews, amid high sector interest but investor caution. Competitor Fyteko raised €13M ($15M) Series B in 2025 to advance bio-based stress tolerance products. SugaROx's single-molecule precision approach stands out, validated by field trials showing wheat yield gains up to 22% even under drought.

Abiotic Stresses Erode Crop Yields

Weather variability ranks as the top risk for nearly all UK wheat farmers, according to a SugaROx survey of 211 growers. Current biostimulants often deliver inconsistent results, with 44% of respondents reporting low impacts from prior trials. Regulatory ambiguity has further eroded farmer confidence in the category.

Caged T6P Unlocks Metabolic Boost

SugaROx's patented 'chemical cage' technology enables foliar delivery of charged T6P molecules into plant cells, where they inhibit SnRK1 enzymes to redirect carbon toward grain filling. Unlike microbial or extract-based rivals, this targets sink strength for late-season yield gains without added nutrients. Field trials across five countries demonstrated 14% wheat yield increases under drought conditions and up to 22% in optimal settings.

As Dr. Cara Griffiths, co-founder and CTO, explained in recent updates:

"Translating fundamental discoveries… into practical tools for agriculture."

Mosaic Deepens Strategic Stake

The Mosaic Company, a Florida-based fertilizer giant, now holds a 25% stake following this £2.5M investment and prior seed funding. This signals convergence between traditional agchem and precision biotech, providing SugaROx with manufacturing scale-up and global distribution potential. Mosaic VP Jeff Wheeler highlighted the alignment:

"SugaROx is advancing a new category of precision biostimulants that aligns closely with our approach at Mosaic Biosciences."

Market Scales on Sustainability Push

The global biostimulants market stood at $4.46B in 2025, projected to reach $7.84B by 2030 at 11.9% CAGR. EU Fertilising Products Regulation now defines biostimulants clearly, easing compliant launches. SugaROx targets row crops like wheat, maize, and soybean, partnering with seed and fertilizer firms for B2B distribution.

Oxford Spin-Out Drives Innovation

Launched in 2021 from the University of Oxford and Rothamsted Research, SugaROx leverages a robust patent portfolio co-invented by Dr. Griffiths. CEO Mark Robbins brings commercial experience to guide the 10-person team toward multi-market expansion. This academic pedigree underpins the technology's peer-reviewed validation, including a Nature Biotechnology study confirming 17% wheat yield gains.

Trials Pave Path to 2027 Launch

With MVP trials completed by 10 UK wheat farmers via ADAS and ongoing H.A.R.V.E.S.T. program tests in California tomatoes, SugaROx eyes UK/EU wheat launches in 2027-2028 and US/Brazil row crops by 2030. Innovate UK-backed on-farm data and Mosaic's resources position the firm for scalable impact amid rising abiotic stresses.
