Reliable Robotics Raises $160M for Autonomous Flight Retrofit

Reliable Robotics, a Silicon Valley-based developer of certifiable autonomous flight systems, has raised $160M in new funding led by Nimble Partners. The Reliable Autonomy System (RAS) enables continuous autopilot through all phases of flight on type-certified aircraft like the Cessna 208B Caravan. The capital will accelerate deployment, scale production, and support FAA certification efforts.

Retrofit Autonomy Accelerates Amid Pilot Shortages

The raise comes as autonomous cargo aviation heats up: Elroy Air has secured $116M total funding, while Merlin Labs raised $134M for co-pilot systems. Xwing, a retrofit peer, was acquired by Joby Aviation after $58M in funding. Reliable's focus on full-authority uncrewed operations for existing Cessna Caravans positions it to deploy faster than VTOL newcomers.

Fatal Crashes Drive Aviation Automation Push

General aviation sees over 70% of fatal accidents preventable by automation like continuous autopilot and detect-and-avoid systems. Pilot shortages exceed 20,000 globally, inflating cargo logistics costs. Current solutions rely on human pilots or limited augmentation, falling short for 24/7 remote cargo and military logistics in contested areas.

Full-Authority RAS Enables Uncrewed Cargo

Reliable's RAS integrates precision navigation, full-authority flight controls, secure communications, and proprietary AESA radar-based detect-and-avoid on Cessna 208B. Unlike competitors' co-pilots or new VTOLs, it supports gate-to-gate uncrewed flights on certified airframes. The system has achieved first uncrewed Cessna flight (Nov 2023), FAA-accepted certification plans, and military airworthiness (Jan 2024).

As CEO Robert Rose stated:

"Aviation is the backbone of global mobility. It’s time to help it scale safely."

Strategic Backers Signal Defense and Scale Play

Nimble Partners led with participation from Eclipse Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Coatue Management, RTX Ventures, AE Ventures (Boeing-affiliated), and Presidio Ventures. This mix blends deep tech VCs with aerospace corporates, validating dual-use potential amid USAF contracts like a $17.4M Cessna integration deal. Total funding now reaches $300M at a near-$1B valuation.

Cargo Market Grows to $4.15B by 2030

The autonomous cargo aircraft market stands at $1.72B in 2026, projected to reach $4.15B by 2030 at 24.6% CAGR per Research and Markets. Reliable targets 2,500+ existing Cessna Caravans for retrofit, outpacing VTOL builds. USAF and FAA programs like eIPP and TACFI accelerate adoption for regional cargo and Indo-Pacific logistics.

SpaceX Veterans Lead Certification Charge

CEO Robert Rose (ex-SpaceX flight software director, Tesla Autopilot senior director) and CTO Juerg Frefel (ex-SpaceX avionics lead) bring safety-critical autonomy expertise. Their track record enabled Falcon 9/Dragon missions and Tesla's self-driving launch. Recent CFO hire Marc Stoll (ex-Apple VP Finance) bolsters scaling.

2026 Ops Target Production Ramp

With over 200 system commitments including ASL Aviation's 30-unit order, Reliable plans summer 2026 cargo routes via Reliable Airlines. Funds expand engineering for FAA documentation and production scaling toward 2026 autonomous operations.
