Moa Technology, an Oxford-based agricultural biotech company, has raised £22.2 million in Series C funding. The round was co-led by Oxford Science Enterprises and Supernova Invest. Moa reinvents herbicide discovery by combining proprietary platforms, AI, and massive datasets to identify new modes of action faster than traditional methods. The capital will advance lead programmes toward commercialisation.

Resistance Crisis Drives Agtech Capital

The timing aligns with accelerating weed resistance and major agrochemical firms seeking external innovation. Enko raised $70M Series C in 2022. GreenLight Biosciences secured $25M Series C in March 2025. Moa's integrated approach across synthetic and bioherbicides addresses the gap left by decades without new commercial modes of action.

273 Resistant Weed Species Threaten Crops

Herbicide resistance affects 273 weed species across 75 countries, causing $32 billion in annual crop losses. No new herbicide mode of action has reached the market in nearly 30 years. Current solutions fall short as resistance evolves faster than new chemistries emerge, pushing farmers to apply more product with declining efficacy.

Plant-Led Platforms Uncover New Modes

Moa's GALAXY platform screens up to 25,000 compounds monthly on living plants to identify novel modes of action. This biology-first method contrasts with competitors' AI-only or RNA-focused strategies. The company has discovered around 80 novel modes of action in four years and completed field trials across three seasons that outperform commercial herbicides.

As Moa noted in recent updates:

"Over the last 20 years, farmers have significantly increased the amount of the herbicides they use… not because the herbicides have got a lot better. It's because most herbicides have stopped working as well as they once used to."

Partnerships Validate Platform Speed

Four major deals in 18 months with Corteva, Nufarm, Gowan, and Certis Belchim signal strategic validation. One partnership advanced more than a year ahead of typical timelines. Investors include repeat backers and new entrants from the UK, Europe, and Australia, reflecting conviction in the platform's ability to deliver commercial candidates.

$32.5B Market Expands Amid Regulatory Shifts

The global herbicide market stands at $32.5 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $51.9 billion by 2034. Key drivers include regulatory pressure on legacy chemistries like glyphosate and demand for safer alternatives. Moa's dual synthetic and bioherbicide pipeline positions it to capture share as incumbents partner externally to replenish stagnant pipelines.

Oxford Spinout Scales R&D Capacity

CEO Dr. Virginia Corless brings astrophysics training from MIT and a Marshall Scholarship PhD from Cambridge. Co-founder Professor Liam Dolan, a Fellow of the Royal Society and former Head of Plant Sciences at Oxford, anchors deep domain expertise. The 30-person team spans 24 nationalities and is actively hiring scientists to support commercialisation.

Commercial Milestones Ahead

With the new capital, Moa will advance lead programmes and expand hiring in R&D roles at its Oxford site. Recent blackgrass field trial successes and Amplifier product category development provide concrete paths to partnership revenue and eventual product launches.
