MDOTM, a London-based provider of an AI-driven investment platform called Sphere, has raised $27 million in growth equity funding led by Expedition Growth Capital. Sphere transforms market intelligence, investment views, and client preferences into scalable decisions, personalized portfolios, and automated client communications for institutional investors. The capital will accelerate global expansion and support hiring across AI research, engineering, product, sales, and client solutions.

AI Moves from Pilots to Production Workflows

The timing aligns with asset and wealth managers shifting from AI experimentation to deploying it at scale. Competitors include Boosted.ai, which raised $83 million including a $15 million Series C in November 2024, and Axyon AI, which secured €11.9 million total. MDOTM's end-to-end approach addresses the gap between generating insights and managing thousands of portfolios while maintaining human oversight and regulatory compliance.

Fee Compression Meets Personalization Demands

Asset and wealth managers face simultaneous pressure from shrinking fees and client expectations for tailored portfolios. Traditional spreadsheet-based processes for rebalancing and reporting cannot scale without adding unsustainable headcount. Institutions need platforms that embed AI into core workflows without sacrificing explainability or control.

Sphere Integrates Insights, Construction, and Reporting

Sphere combines three modules: AI-Driven Insights for market regime detection, Portfolio Studio for constructing and rebalancing thousands of portfolios at scale, and StoryFolio for generative AI-powered client commentary. Unlike point solutions focused only on signals or research, the platform allows users to override AI outputs with their own views while ensuring outputs remain auditable.

As Steve Twomey of Expedition Growth Capital noted:

"Financial institutions have spent the last decade buying back-office and front-end software, but the work in the middle still happens in spreadsheets. MDOTM has built the AI infrastructure that finally scales that work."

Expedition Growth Capital Validates Institutional Focus

The lead investor brings expertise in scaling software companies serving financial institutions. New board members Steve Twomey and James Hays, former CEO of Wells Fargo Advisors, add operational depth and credibility with large asset managers. The round brings total funding to $36.5 million.

Market Projected at $7.1B Growing to $21.82B by 2030

The AI in asset management market is projected to grow from $7.1 billion in 2026 to $21.82 billion by 2030 at a 32.4% CAGR. MDOTM already supports more than $100 billion in assets across 60-plus institutions including Morgan Stanley, Amundi, and J.P. Morgan. Qraft Technologies has raised $163 million total while Aisot Technologies raised roughly $5 million.

Structural shifts including fee compression and demand for mass personalization are driving capital into platforms that replace manual middle-office processes. MDOTM's governance features, including ISO 27001 certification and FCA regulation, position it for regulated environments where competitors focused on narrower use cases may struggle.

US Expansion and Team Growth Ahead

With offices already in New York, London, and Milan, the company plans to expand hiring in the Americas and globally. Peter Zangari, formerly of Goldman Sachs, MSCI, and J.P. Morgan, leads US efforts. The platform's traction with top-tier firms signals readiness for broader adoption as institutions move AI into daily operations.
