Magnendo raised $18M Series A led by Penumbra for its magnetic robotic navigation system targeting stroke intervention. The MIT spinout will use funds for first-in-human studies.

Magnendo, a Newton, Massachusetts-based developer of a magnetic robotic navigation system for endovascular neurointervention, has raised $18 million in Series A funding led by Penumbra. The system combines magnetically steerable guidewires with robotic control, advanced medical imaging, and navigation software to enable faster, safer access to the brain's vasculature for treating stroke and brain aneurysms. The capital will accelerate product development and preparation for first-in-human clinical studies.

Penumbra's Strategic Move in Neurovascular Robotics

The timing comes amid growing interest in robotic navigation for endovascular procedures. Nanoflex Robotics raised approximately $30.6 million including a $12 million seed in 2023 and a €12.5 million EIC Accelerator grant in 2026. Route 92 Medical secured over $82 million across multiple rounds including a $50 million growth financing in 2026. Magnendo's approach using soft-robotic guidewires addresses navigation challenges in tortuous cerebral anatomy that limit current mechanical thrombectomy procedures.

Navigation Bottleneck Limits Stroke Treatment

Navigating from the vascular access site to the clot through complex and often highly tortuous patient anatomy continues to be a major procedural bottleneck in mechanical thrombectomy. The company's preclinical studies with neurointerventional physicians showed potential to reduce navigation times and improve procedural consistency. Current solutions fall short for previously untreatable areas of the brain, leaving many stroke patients without timely intervention.

MIT Spinout Builds Soft Robotic Guidewires

Magnendo originated from MIT's Deshpande Center project on Robo-thread for endovascular neurosurgery. Its ferromagnetic soft continuum robot technology enables atraumatic navigation through the brain's most tortuous vessels without vessel perforation risk. This differs from competitors like Stereotaxis, which adapted cardiac systems, or Nanoflex, which emphasizes telerobotics. The platform integrates with existing clinical workflows and commercially available devices.

Corporate Investor Validates Technology Path

Penumbra led the round as a strategic investor, bringing domain expertise in neurovascular intervention and a global commercial infrastructure. The backing from the world's leading thrombectomy company signals validation that magnetic robotic navigation complements existing aspiration-based systems. Additional participation came from new and existing institutional investors including Kakao Ventures, Bass Investment, and SBXi.

Endovascular Robotics Market Expands Rapidly

The endovascular robotic systems market stands at $1.62 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach $4.04 billion by 2034 at a 12.1% CAGR, according to Fortune Business Insights. Magnetic navigation surgical robots are growing at 12.3% CAGR toward $3.5 billion by 2034. Structural drivers include expanding thrombectomy indications, physician shortages, and demand for reduced procedure times and radiation exposure.

Ex-Medtronic Executive Joins MIT Team

Founder and CEO Yoonho Kim, Ph.D., brings MIT robotics expertise with the company emerging from a 2021 academic project. Miki Rosenberg, former VP R&D at Medtronic Surgical Robotics, serves in leadership. Dr. Aman Patel, Director of Endovascular Neurosurgery at Harvard/MGH, provides clinical guidance. This combination of academic IP and industry execution experience supports the transition from preclinical validation to first-in-human studies.

Funding Positions Platform for Clinical Entry

With deployments in preclinical studies already presented at the SVIN 2025 Late-Breaking Trials session, Magnendo plans to advance the robotic system and magnetic guidewires toward clinical evaluation. The $18 million provides runway for productization while Penumbra's involvement offers a potential integration pathway into established thrombectomy workflows.
