K2 Space, a Torrance, CA-based satellite manufacturer, has raised $500 million in Series D funding led by ICONIQ and Kleiner Perkins. The company builds the largest, highest-power satellites on orbit, challenging the industry trend toward miniaturization with its Mega Class platform that delivers 30kW peak payload power and 3,000 kg payload mass. The capital will accelerate manufacturing capacity to 100 satellites per year and expand engineering teams.
Contrarian Bet Pays Off
The timing comes amid surging demand for high-power platforms. Apex Space raised $407M+ in a Series D at $2.3B valuation in June 2026, while Astranis secured $450M in Series E funding in May 2026. K2 Space's approach of building 10x more powerful satellites addresses missions that smallsats cannot support, including space-based compute and advanced defense payloads.
High-Power Platforms Unlock New Missions
Current satellite solutions often fall short on power for complex applications. K2's Gravitas satellite, a 20kW platform launched in March 2026, now operates with 12 hosted payloads and has demonstrated orbit-raising capability. Competitors like York Space Systems focus on smaller buses for volume constellations, while K2 targets high-power, multi-payload missions in LEO, MEO, GEO, and cislunar orbits.
Dual-Use Contracts Drive Scale
K2 has secured over $1 billion in signed contracts across commercial and government customers. The company won supplier roles in the U.S. Space Force satcom program alongside Rocket Lab and was selected by Anduril for the Golden Dome spacecraft. A commercial deal with SES will see K2 manufacture 28 satellites for the meoSphere MEO network.

ICONIQ and Kleiner Perkins Lead Round
The $500M round at a $6.8B valuation was co-led by ICONIQ and Kleiner Perkins, bringing total capital raised above $1 billion. The investor profile signals strong conviction in K2's production ramp and national security positioning, with the company now valued at more than twice its $3B Series C valuation from December 2025.
Satellite Manufacturing Market Expands
The satellite manufacturing market stands at $30.85B in 2026 and is projected to reach $103.68B by 2034, according to market research. Growth is driven by falling launch costs, national security demand, and emerging applications like orbital data centers. K2's 85% vertical integration and 180,000 sq ft Torrance factory position it to capture share in the high-power segment.
Ex-SpaceX Talent Scales Production
Founders Karan Kunjur and Neel Kunjur have assembled a team heavy with SpaceX alumni, including recent hires in avionics, propulsion, and structures. The company opened a Seattle engineering hub in July 2026 to support flight software and autonomy development.
Production Ramp Targets 2028
With Gravitas operational and the Trinity mission planned for 2027, K2 aims to reach 3 dozen satellites per year by 2028. The Giga Class platform, targeting 110kW, is slated for introduction in the second half of 2028 to support space-based data centers.
