Isar Aerospace, a Germany-based launch service provider, has raised €270 million in Series D funding. The company develops the Spectrum two-stage orbital launch vehicle for small and medium satellites, using in-house engines and LOX/propane propulsion. The capital will support industrialization, serial production, and launch preparations for its first orbital flights.
Europe Seeks Launch Independence
The timing aligns with Europe's push for sovereign space access after exiting reliance on Russian launchers. Isar recently partnered with Maritime Launch Services for orbital readiness from Nova Scotia. The company also secured its first active debris removal mission with Astroscale and won ESA contracts up to €205 million.
Dependence on Non-European Launchers
Europe faces a bottleneck in dedicated small satellite launches. Government programs and commercial constellation operators need reliable, independent access. Current solutions often require foreign providers, creating strategic vulnerabilities for defense and institutional missions.
Spectrum Targets Dedicated European Launches
Spectrum offers up to 1,000 kg to LEO with flexible dedicated, lead, and rideshare configurations. Unlike competitors focused on reusability or hybrid propulsion, Isar emphasizes vertical integration, additive manufacturing, and rapid serial production at a new 40,000 m² facility capable of 40 rockets per year.
As CEO Daniel Metzler stated:
"There is no question that we will reach orbit and demonstrate reliable access to space."
Established European Investors Back Scale
The round drew participation from Lakestar, Earlybird Venture Capital, Airbus Ventures, HV Capital, Porsche SE, and UVC Partners. Existing backers increased exposure while new strategic investors like Porsche SE joined, signaling confidence in European launch sovereignty and Isar's execution track record.
Small Launch Market Expands Rapidly
The small launch vehicle market is projected to grow from $1.71 billion in 2025 to $5.36 billion by 2030 at 14.2% CAGR. PLD Space has raised $432 million while Rocket Lab secured over $300 million. Isar's approach addresses Europe's specific need for independent capacity amid rising smallsat demand.
Political Support Strengthens Position
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre visited Isar's launch site. The company operates across five countries with 400+ employees and has completed its first Spectrum test flight, targeting a second launch in early 2026.
