Cognition (cognition.ai), developer of autonomous AI software engineering tools, has raised over $1B at a $26B valuation led by Lux Capital, General Catalyst, and 8VC. Cognition builds Devin, the first autonomous AI software engineer that plans, writes, tests, and ships production code independently within existing codebases. The capital will accelerate product development and enterprise deployments.

Agentic AI Funding Surges Past $1B

The timing aligns with a broader shift toward fully autonomous coding agents. Anysphere (Cursor) raised $3.5B total including a $2.3B Series D. Codeium secured $243M at a $1.25B+ valuation. Cognition's approach differentiates by delivering end-to-end autonomous engineering rather than interactive IDE assistance.

Legacy Code and Talent Shortages Drive Demand

Enterprises face mounting pressure from retiring COBOL developers and the need to modernize systems. 92% of COBOL developers will retire by 2030. Current tools fall short for complex, multi-step engineering tasks across legacy and modern environments.

Devin Delivers End-to-End Autonomy

Devin operates as a collaborative teammate with integrations across cloud, terminal, and IDE environments. It supports Windows VMs, Android emulators, COBOL modernization, and .NET migrations. This stands in contrast to competitors like Cursor, which focuses on interactive code editing, and Codeium, which emphasizes autocomplete and chat assistance.

As Cognition noted in its announcement:

"Devin is responsible for 89% of the PRs written at Cognition."

Tier-1 Investors Signal Category Conviction

Founders Fund led a prior $400M round and continued participation, alongside new investor Bain Capital Ventures. Lux Capital and 8VC also participated. Their focus on deep tech and agentic systems validates the thesis that autonomous coding agents represent a transformative category.

Agentic AI Market Scales Rapidly

The agentic AI market stands at $10.8 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach $139-196 billion by 2034 at over 40% CAGR. GenAI tools in the software development lifecycle reached $845M in 2026 with 35.3% CAGR. Competitors include Replit at roughly $877M raised and open-source alternatives like OpenDevin.

Cognition has reached $492M annualized revenue run rate with customers including Mercedes-Benz, NASA, Goldman Sachs, and Santander. Partnerships with Cognizant and Infosys extend reach into consulting and global client bases.
