Altillion Raises $5M Seed for Brine Mineral Extraction

Altillion raised $5M seed led by EIC Rose Rock and Flathead Forge for low-cost extraction of iodine and lithium from oilfield brines using solvent extraction.

Altillion, a Houston-based provider of solvent extraction technology for critical minerals from complex brines, has raised $5 million in seed funding led by EIC Rose Rock and Flathead Forge. The company's ALIX and IRIS platforms use modular solvent extraction to concentrate and purify lithium, iodine, and other minerals from oilfield produced water and geothermal brines at over 50% lower cost than traditional methods.

Critical Minerals Push Spurs Brine Innovation

The timing aligns with surging investment in domestic lithium and iodine supply chains. EnergyX raised over $450M, Lilac Solutions secured $315M, and Standard Lithium obtained $355M plus a $225M DOE grant. Altillion's solvent extraction approach complements existing direct lithium extraction methods by handling ultra-low concentrations down to 3-4 ppm and collapsing multi-step flowsheets.

Oilfield Wastewater Holds Untapped Value

Oil and gas operators generate roughly 1 trillion gallons of produced water annually, typically treated as a disposal cost. Altillion's IRIS platform extracts high-purity iodine directly without blowout towers, achieving 99.664% mass purity. ALIX concentrates lithium from 15 mg/L to over 30,000 mg/L with up to 99% recovery while cutting concentration and purification costs by more than half.

Solvent Extraction Complements DLE Methods

ALIX runs downstream of any direct lithium extraction technology, whether ion-exchange, absorbent, or membrane-based, rather than competing directly. The system uses two stages with seconds-long residence time versus the 5-7 stages required by conventional solvent extraction. Partnerships with Evove for membranes and Telescope Innovations for recrystallization have already produced battery-grade lithium carbonate at 99.9% purity.

"Altillion's value proposition transforms oilfield produced water into a critical minerals revenue stream."

Mission Investors Back Commercial Scale-Up

EIC Rose Rock, a partnership between the George Kaiser Family Foundation, Fortune 500 energy leaders, and Energy Innovation Capital, led the round alongside Flathead Forge. The funding targets commercialization of IRIS and ALIX following multiple paid feasibility studies across the Permian, Haynesville, and Anadarko basins.

Lithium and Iodine Markets Expand Rapidly

The lithium extraction market is projected to grow from $5.0B in 2025 to $5.9B in 2026 and reach $11.9B by 2033 at a 10.5% CAGR. Direct lithium extraction specifically is expected to expand from $1.6B in 2026 to $5.72B by 2036. The iodine market, valued near $2.5B, grows at 5-6% annually as the US remains a net importer despite domestic brine resources.

Competitors like Mangrove Lithium raised roughly $95M and Summit Nanotech closed $25.5M in March 2025, yet most focus solely on lithium while Altillion targets multi-mineral recovery including copper and bromine.
