Afresh, a San Francisco-based AI-powered Fresh Operating System for grocery retailers, has raised $34M in Series A funding co-led by Just Climate and HighSage Ventures. The platform unifies replenishment, forecasting, production planning, inventory management, and DC buying, purpose-built for fresh foods' perishability. The capital will scale the AI across more retailers and expand to full-store operations including center store and general merchandise.

Grocery AI Funding Accelerates

The round arrives as competitors intensify efforts against food waste. Shelf Engine raised $45M for automated ordering of perishables, while Freshflow secured $9M focused on Europe. Afresh differentiates with end-to-end optimization across fresh perimeter and now center store, powering 12,500+ departments at chains like Albertsons and Wakefern per company data.

Fresh Foods Waste $27B Annually

U.S. grocery stores lose $27B yearly to food waste, mostly from produce, meat, and deli due to perishability, unpredictable demand, and manual processes. Traditional tools fail fresh goods' volatility, evaporation, and messy data like mis-scans. Grocers face tight margins amid inflation and labor shortages, amplifying shrink's impact.

AI Handles Fresh Complexity

Afresh's platform tackles these with grocery-specific AI, forecasting demand via weather, food stamps timing, and vendor performance. It automates replenishment, production planning, and inventory counts, delivering 25% shrink reduction, 3% sales lift, and 80% fewer stockouts according to deployments. Unlike hardware-reliant rivals like OneThird's scanners, Afresh is software-only.

As CEO Matt Schwartz noted:

"We’ve spent nearly a decade building AI to solve the complexity of grocery… Our platform orchestrates those decisions at scale."

Climate VCs Back Full-Store Pivot

Just Climate, a specialist in food systems decarbonization, co-led to cut emissions from waste—Afresh has prevented 200M pounds per PR. Returning investor HighSage Ventures, with exits like Sweetgreen IPO, signals growth conviction in retail tech. This mix validates Afresh's maturity post-Albertsons nationwide rollout.

AI Grocery Market Hits $13.4B

The AI in food retail market grows from $2.7B in 2024 to $13.4B by 2030 at 30.8% CAGR, driven by waste reduction and optimization. Invafresh, acquired after $10M, trails in scale. 2026 state laws mandate waste diversion, boosting demand per policy analysis.

Stanford PhDs Power Defensible AI

Co-founder Volodymyr Kuleshov, Stanford CS PhD and Cornell professor, built the ML core for perishable forecasting. CEO Matt Schwartz brings Bain strategy and prior food startup experience. CPO Nathan Fenner adds engineering depth, enabling 70% YoY growth and full fresh rollouts at Albertsons via leadership bios.

Total Store Expansion Accelerates

Afresh recently launched total store coverage, processing 320M+ center store orders yearly. Funds support more grocer rollouts like Stater Bros. DC forecast and new CRO hire for go-to-market scaling per recent activity. With 886M gallons water saved, environmental wins align business gains.
